I didn't buy food for dinner ví we had to tát go out.
--> I forgot___food for dinner ví we had to tát go out.
A. to tát buy
B.buying
The correct answer here is B. Can anyone please explain to tát me? I thought it was A.

    Well my teacher insisted that the correct answer was B.
    I can't understand (or even remember) her explanation.
    It was to tát complex and I'm really confused.

    It's conjugated verb plus infinitive - that's the rule. Your teacher is wrong.

    to go

    out
    We wanted

    to leave

    I've learnt that "forget" can be follow by both "to V" and "V-ing".
    "to V" is used to tát say about things you have to tát vì thế (but you forget) and "V-ing" is correct when you mean to tát say that you forget you've done sth.
    the tense of the verb "forget" has no bearing on the sườn of the verb that follow.
    Is that right???

    If you are remembering the sentence correctly, it's wrong. "I forgot about buying food for dinner" would be possible.

    By the way, welcome to tát the forums. Please try to tát use correct English as best you can (i.e. no chatspeak lượt thích "u" for "you").

    EDIT: Oh, I see. Yes, "I forgot v-ing" can mean "I forgot that I v-ed". I suppose "I forgot buying food for dinner, ví we had to tát go out" could mean "I forgot that I bought food for dinner, ví we had to tát go out". But the fact that three people didn't understand the sentence that way shows that it's not a very natural construction in this context. I don't think it's a structure I use that often.

    I forgot to buy coffee, ví I had to tát drink tea instead: I didn't buy the coffee, because I forgot that I needed to tát buy it.

    The correct answer to tát your original question is A: I forgot to buy food......

    PS. Just to tát add: I think we normally use the "forget + ING" construction in the negative - I'll

    Yes, it sounds a lot more natural with "never". (Including in the past tense - "I never forgot buying my first pair of shoes" :tick: , but not in the present - "I never forget buying coffee" :cross:, "I never forget to tát buy coffee" :tick:.)

    that's how I understand it:
    I forgot to tát eat lunch - I forgot to tát eat lunch, and therefore I didn't eat it
    I forgot eating lunch - I forgot about the fact that I ate lunch

    Mind you, the second one is rarely used or not used at all.

    Yes, don't say 'I forgot eating lunch'.

    You can, however say things lượt thích, 'You can forget (about) eating lunch', which means there won't be any lunch ví you should stop thinking about it. 'Forget' there means to tát put away from your mind deliberately. This is a different construction from your original one.
